CAN DOGS EAT CANTALOUPE?
Cantaloupe flesh is safe, hydrating, and rich in beta-carotene and vitamin C — excellent for dogs in hot weather. Remove the rind and seeds before serving.
Can Dogs Eat Cantaloupe?
Why?
Cantaloupe is approximately 90% water and exceptionally hydrating, making it an ideal hot-weather treat. It's rich in beta-carotene (which converts to vitamin A), vitamin C, potassium, and B vitamins while being low in calories for a sweet fruit.
The flesh is completely safe. The rind, while not acutely toxic, is hard, fibrous, and difficult to digest — it can cause GI obstruction particularly in small dogs who might swallow a large piece. The seeds are not toxic but should be removed for cleanliness.
Cantaloupe is moderately high in natural sugar compared to most vegetables, so diabetic dogs or those on caloric restriction should receive it only in small amounts. For healthy dogs, a few cubes is a perfectly safe and nutritious treat.
How much is dangerous?
Not toxic. Very large amounts cause loose stools from natural sugars.
What are the symptoms?
- GI softness from sugar/fiber if fed excessively
What should I do?
No action needed. Remove rind before serving.
