Why?

Hemp seeds (Cannabis sativa seeds, hulled) contain no THC or CBD — these compounds are found in the plant's flowers and leaves, not the seeds. Hulled hemp seeds are nutritionally similar to flaxseeds but with a better fatty acid balance: a near-ideal 3:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3.

They also provide gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which has anti-inflammatory properties, and complete protein with all essential amino acids. Their digestibility is excellent — they can be added to food directly without grinding.

Hemp seed oil contains the same beneficial fatty acids in a more bioavailable form. Both seed and oil are legal in all US states and commercially available in pet-specific formulations.

A teaspoon of hemp seeds per 10 lbs of body weight, a few times per week, is a reasonable supplement. They have a mild, nutty flavor that dogs generally find palatable.

How much is dangerous?

Frequently asked questions.

Is hemp different from cannabis for dogs?

Hemp seeds (the food) contain no THC. CBD products made from hemp flowers contain cannabidiol — a separate topic with different evidence and regulatory status.
