CAN DOGS EAT PEANUT BUTTER?
Traditional peanut butter is one of the safest dog treats — but some brands use xylitol as a sweetener, which is violently toxic to dogs. Always read the label.
Can Dogs Eat Peanut Butter?
Why?
Peanut butter made with just peanuts (and sometimes salt and oil) is an excellent dog treat: high in protein, healthy fats, and dogs love it. It's used to hide pills, fill toys, and reward good behavior safely. The vast majority of popular peanut butter brands are xylitol-free.
The danger emerged when several specialty peanut butter brands (often marketed as "natural" or "sugar-free") began using xylitol as a sweetener. Xylitol causes life-threatening hypoglycemia in dogs at very small doses — a few tablespoons of xylitol-containing peanut butter is a veterinary emergency.
Xylitol-containing peanut butter brands include: Go Nuts Co, Krush Nutrition, Nuts 'N More, and P28. This list changes as manufacturers reformulate — checking the label every time is the only reliable protection. Salt is also a consideration: unsalted or lightly salted varieties are preferable, and peanut butter should be offered in moderation due to its high caloric density.
How much is dangerous?
If xylitol-free: no established toxic dose. Excessive amounts cause GI upset and potential pancreatitis from fat. If xylitol-containing: 0.1g of xylitol per kg of body weight causes hypoglycemia.
What are the symptoms?
- if xylitol-containing: vomiting, weakness, collapse, seizures within 30–60 minutes
- if xylitol-free: GI upset from excess fat only
What should I do?
If xylitol-containing peanut butter was given: emergency vet immediately. If traditional xylitol-free peanut butter was given in large amounts: monitor for vomiting/diarrhea and contact your vet.
Frequently asked questions.
Which peanut butter is safe for dogs?
Jif, Skippy, Peter Pan, and most grocery-store brands are safe as of current formulations. Always check: look for "xylitol" in the ingredients. If present, do not feed.
How much peanut butter can a dog have?
A teaspoon is a reasonable daily amount for a medium dog. More than 2 tablespoons daily risks GI upset and adds excessive calories.
Can dogs eat chunky peanut butter?
Yes. The texture (smooth vs. chunky) does not affect safety — the xylitol question applies equally to both.
