Why?

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) is technically a seed that cooks like a grain, providing all nine essential amino acids — making it one of very few plant foods to offer a complete protein. It also provides iron, magnesium, phosphorus, B vitamins, and fiber.

Quinoa contains saponin in its natural coating — a mildly bitter compound that can cause GI irritation if not rinsed. Always rinse dry quinoa thoroughly before cooking, or choose pre-rinsed quinoa. Fully cooked quinoa has negligible saponin levels.

Plain cooked quinoa mixed into dog food as a meal topper is safe and nutritious. Some commercial dog foods include quinoa as a complex carbohydrate and protein supplement. Avoid flavored quinoa dishes with garlic, onion, or salt.

How much is dangerous?

Not toxic when cooked. Raw unrinsed quinoa can cause GI irritation from saponin.
