CAN DOGS EAT TOFU?
Plain tofu is not toxic to dogs and provides protein, but its high soy content means it's not suitable for dogs with hypothyroidism or soy allergies.
Can Dogs Eat Tofu?
Why?
Tofu is made from coagulated soy milk and is not acutely toxic to dogs. It provides protein, calcium, and iron. Some commercial dog foods include soy as a protein source, and dogs generally digest it adequately.
The considerations: soy contains phytoestrogens (isoflavones) that can interfere with thyroid hormone metabolism in large regular amounts — particularly relevant for dogs with hypothyroidism. Soy is also one of the more common food allergens in dogs, so any dog on an allergy elimination diet should avoid tofu.
Flavored or seasoned tofu — teriyaki, garlic-marinated, sesame — contains toxic seasonings and should never be given. Only plain, firm tofu that has been cooked without seasonings is appropriate as an occasional treat.
How much is dangerous?
Not acutely toxic. Phytoestrogens from large regular amounts may affect thyroid function.
What are the symptoms?
- GI upset from soy intolerance in sensitive dogs; thyroid effects with chronic overfeeding
What should I do?
Plain tofu occasionally: no action needed. Seasoned tofu: contact vet if garlic or onion was in the marinade.
Frequently asked questions.
Is tofu a good protein source for dogs?
It's adequate as a supplement, but not an ideal primary protein because of phytoestrogen content and soy allergen potential. Animal protein is better utilized.
Can dogs with thyroid disease eat tofu?
Consult your vet. Phytoestrogens in soy can interfere with thyroid medication absorption — avoiding soy products is often recommended for hypothyroid dogs.
